The Atlanta Falcons, who profile to be pretty good this year especially in a weak division, went out and paid Kirk Cousins some ungodly amount of money in the offseason to be their starting quarterback in 2024-2025 and beyond. They could certainly make a deep playoff run if things fall right BUT INSTEAD OF GETTING COUSINS ANOTHER WIDE RECEIVER or a lineman or something..... they took a backup QB with the 8th overall pick.
Michael Penix of Washington.
Factoring in the multiple serious serious injuries, his age, the cost (8th overall) to get him, the fact that he didn't look good in the national champ game or the senior bowl..... makes this potentially the worst draft pick ever. The Falcons need to choose a narrative. Win now with Cousins or build around Penix. Not both. But it's too late for all that because they have both QBs and Penix is projected to sit for 2-3 years assuming the Falcons are winning 10 or so games a year with Cousins under center and a pretty talented offensive supporting cast that includes other weird high draft picks like Bijan and Kyle Pitts. I don't get it. By the time Penix plays he will be halfway through his rookie deal. WTF Atlanta.
